Class I–II on the lower Savegre: your guide rows, nobody paddles, and you watch the jungle go by.
No helmet. No paddle. Bring a hat.
This is the quiet end of the Savegre, 45 minutes from Manuel Antonio, where the river spreads out and takes its time. Your guide does the rowing. You sit back and look.
What you look for: kingfishers working the bank, white ibis in the shallows, iguanas on the branches over the water and, on a good day, monkeys or a sloth. We can't promise who shows up. What we can promise is a guide who has been reading these trees for years and will point out things you would have floated right past.
The river carries you under big old trees, guanacaste, wild cashew and ashwood, then past wild cane and small farms. The Savegre is one of the cleanest rivers in Costa Rica, and down here it's quiet.
Partway down we pull up on a beach. You stretch your legs, eat some fresh fruit and have something cold to drink.
That's the trip. An hour and a half to two hours on the water, depending on the level. Nobody gets scared. Your feet get wet.

Small children, from age 4. Grandparents. Anyone in your group who said no to the rafting. People who would rather look for birds than hold a paddle. Photographers.
If the kids want splashes, look at the Savegre Rafting Tour (Class II–III, age 6 and up).

Private is your group only, with pickup at your hotel in Manuel Antonio or Quepos.
Small Group costs less per person and needs a minimum of three or four people, depending on the trip.
Just Rafting is for guests with their own car. There is no transport: you meet us at the river. It needs four people and is offered on El Chorro and the Naranjo.
Go by the youngest person. The Savegre Safari Tour is from age 4. The Savegre Rafting Tour and the Naranjo Tubing Tour are from 6. The Naranjo Rafting Tour and the Savegre Jungle Tubing Tour are from 12. The Chorro Rafting Tour is from 14.
El Chorro runs December 15 to April 30, depending on water levels. The Naranjo rafting trip runs May 1 to December 14. The Savegre trips and Naranjo Tubing run all year.
The Savegre Rafting Tour includes lunch, and so does the private Savegre Jungle Tubing Tour. Morning trips on the Chorro and Naranjo Rafting Tours finish in Quepos near noon, a great time to go explore the local restaurants.
