Class II–III on one of the cleanest rivers in Costa Rica: splashy rapids, a waterfall swim, and a day the whole family can do together.
This is the trip for the whole family. Not most of it. All of it: the seven-year-old, the teenagers, and the grandmother who said she would just watch.
The Savegre is playful rapids and big splashes, Class II and III. Enough to soak everybody and get the kids screaming, never enough to scare them off. It is one of the cleanest rivers in the country, the water is warm, and you won't be sharing it with a crowd.
The drive up takes about an hour and a half, and the last part is bumpy. The guides turn it into a tour. They stop the van for a sloth, pick something off a tree for you to smell or taste, and have been known to fold an animal out of a palm leaf for a kid in the back seat.
Halfway down we walk a few minutes to a waterfall and swim in the pool underneath while the guides lay out the snack: fresh fruit, pico de gallo made on the spot, and something cold to drink. Guests talk about that snack almost as much as the rapids.
Then one last rapid, Santo Domingo, and lunch. Have it as a river lunch, set out right on the bank, or as a Costa Rican plate at a small restaurant on the way home.

Families with children from age 6. First-timers. Groups where the youngest is seven and the oldest is seventy-seven and everybody wants to be in the same river.
It also works for big groups. We have taken wedding parties, school classes and families of ten down the Savegre.
If your group wants more white water, look at the Naranjo (Class III–IV). If you want none at all, look at the Savegre Safari float.

Private is your group only, with pickup at your hotel in Manuel Antonio or Quepos.
Small Group costs less per person and needs a minimum of three or four people, depending on the trip.
Just Rafting is for guests with their own car. There is no transport: you meet us at the river. It needs four people and is offered on El Chorro and the Naranjo.
Go by the youngest person. The Savegre Safari Tour is from age 4. The Savegre Rafting Tour and the Naranjo Tubing Tour are from 6. The Naranjo Rafting Tour and the Savegre Jungle Tubing Tour are from 12. The Chorro Rafting Tour is from 14.
El Chorro runs December 15 to April 30, depending on water levels. The Naranjo rafting trip runs May 1 to December 14. The Savegre trips and Naranjo Tubing run all year.
The Savegre Rafting Tour includes lunch, and so does the private Savegre Jungle Tubing Tour. Morning trips on the Chorro and Naranjo Rafting Tours finish in Quepos near noon, a great time to go explore the local restaurants.
